The truth is often time hard to swallow because we’ve been lying to ourselves for so long that it hurts to hear something that disproves our own lies.

You already know that Google recently flipped the entire internet on its head over the last few weeks with their new Penguin Update.

It hit a site of mine that I’d spent around $10,000 on with different link building strategies (including BuildMyRank whose entire network got de-indexed).

Initially, I was royally pissed off.  I still am to a certain point.  That’s quite a bit of money to lose.  Yet, I had a bit of an epiphany because of this situation.

I asked for it…

If you got hit, so did you.

I’ve seen plenty of people complain that they use only “White hat” SEO strategies and Google was in the wrong for penalizing their website.

The truth is that any SEO is an attempt to manipulate Google and other search engines to place a priority on our sites over our competitors.  If you’re doing SEO, you’re trying to trick them.

They make their money through the amount of control they have over the web, so it’s in their best interest to make it as difficult as possible for you to rank well.

Things like BuildMyRank made it too easy to rank, it was just a matter of time before Google stepped in and did something about it.  They’re a billion dollar company and a majority of their revenue comes from ad sales.  They are able to sell ads because they control a ton of traffic on the web.

I’ve built most of my business going against the grain.  If I’m not fighting, something is wrong.

I guess picking a fight with Google wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve ever done…

They pretty much have all the power.  There isn’t much we can do as marketers to change anything when Google implements a shift in their algorithm.  We can take notes and change how we move forward, and that’s pretty much it.

Once Google hit us with their new update, every search I did gave very different results from just a few weeks ago.

For awhile, there was a blogger blog that ranked #1 for “make money online”.  It was blank.  Not a single post.

What that means to me is that Google is going to keep shifting the algorithm for some time to come.  Who knows when they’ll actually get to a point of providing useful results.

If you’ve gotten slapped, some of my buddies have reported some success by increasing the social activity to the slapped websites.  Others have said they’re doing exactly what they did before and the sites are starting to bounce back.

I’m not going to give any advice at all as far as the slap is concerned.  I don’t think any smart SEO person will.  Nobody knows where things will lie in the end.  All we can do is watch.

While I planned on sitting and watching, I had a bit of a revelation.  I noticed that a specific type of site was ranking far more often than before.  So, I tested something that worked like crazy.
